2023 Hugo, Lodestar, and Astounding Nominees

Winners will be announced October 21, 2023, at the Chengdu Worldcon in Chengdu, China.

Some stats on the nominees in the top four fiction categories:

Novel nominees:

Moreno-Garcia: first Hugo nomination ever. This novel placed 3rd in the Locus Poll for SFnovel, and is nominated for an Aurora Award.

Scalzi: 12th nomination. Has won three times, once for novel (Redshirts in 2013), once for related book, once for fan writer.

Baldree: first Hugo nom. This book is also Nebula nomimee, and placed second in the Locus Poll for first novel.

Kingfisher: fourth and fifth Hugo nominations, for novel and novella, this year. Won in 2021 for short story “Metal Like Blood in the Dark”. This work also a Nebula and Dragon nominee, and placed second for Locus fantasy novel.

Muir: third and fourth Hugo noms this year, for novel and series. This book also a Nebula nom, and placed third for Locus fantasy novel.

Kowal: 11th Hugo nom, having won four times, for a novel, a novelette, a related work, and a short story. This book placed 5th in the Locus Poll for SF novel.

novella:

Polk: second Hugo nomination. This work won the Nebula, placed 2nd in the Locus Poll, and is a pending nominee for the Ignyte and Aurora awards.

Vo: second nomination. Won the Hugo in 2021 for THE EMPRESS OF SALT AND FORTUNE; this work placed third in the Locus Poll for best novella.

Harrow: sixth Hugo nomination. Won in 2019 for short story; this story placed 4th in the Locus Poll.

Tchaikovsky: second and third Hugo nominations this year for novella and series. This story placed 10th in the Locus Poll, and was a British SF Association nominee.

Kingfisher: This story won the Locus Poll for horror novel, but is a novella nominee for the Hugos.

McGuire: 22nd and 23rd Hugo nominations this year, for novella and for series. She’s won five times, for fanzine, series, novella, and fancast twice.

novelette:

Valente: 12th Hugo nomination. Won earlier for fancast, twice. This story placed 4th in the Locus Poll.

Talabi: first Hugo nomination. The story placed 3rd in the Locus Poll, and was also a Nebula nominee.

Chu: second Hugo nomination; he won for his first, back in 2014. This story won the Nebula and Locus Awards, and is nominated for an Ignyte Award.

Huang: second and third Hugo nomination this year, for novelette and related work; won in this category in 2020 for “As the Last I May Know”. This story was also a Nebula and Ignyte nominee.

Ya: first Hugo nomination, first entry in this database.

Vibbert: first Hugo nomination; the story was also a Nebula nominee.

Wiswell: third Hugo nomination. This story placed 4th in the Locus Poll, and was also a Nebula nominee.

Bo: first Hugo nomination.

Mills: first Hugo nomination. The story has already won the Locus and Nebula awards, and is a finalist for the Sturgeon Award.

Qing: first Hugo nomination.

Ban: first Hugo nomination.

Wang: first and second Hugo nominations this year, for short story and fanzine.
