Anthologies & Collections Directory

science fiction awards database

4 August 2014, updated 23 Aug --

Anthologies are the third leg, after Awards and Citations, of the sfadb tripod. Anthologies supplement awards data for short fiction as Citations supplement awards data for books. (Though there will be crossovers in both directions.)

Sfadb will eventually consolidate data from awards, citations, and anthology/collection reprints, in order to profile the most significant books and stories across the history of the sf/f/h genres, in a data-driven, statistical manner.

We anticipate adding the contents of several hundred anthologies, and some author collections (mostly "best of" collections), to this site over the next few weeks and months. Source data is mostly taken from the latest consolidated version of William G. Contento's Locus Index to Science Fiction: 1984-2011, with data for later books, to be posted, compiled manually.

These books will be grouped, roughly, five ways: Tomes, those large, often door-stopper books that present themselves as authoritative representations of one or another genre or era; Bests, which are like Tomes except that their scope is limited to stories from a particular magazine, anthology, or award; Selects and Themes, anthologies that focus on stories of quality or stories on a particular theme, without the scope or ambition of the Tomes; Annuals, anthologies that focus on the best stories from a particular year (Bleiler/Dikty, Merril, Wollheim and/or Carr, Harrison/Aldiss, del Rey, Dozois, Datlow/Windling, Strahan, Horton, et al); and Collections, single-author books that establish what the author, or an editor, feels are that author's best works.

This plan entails not compiling *original* anthologies, like Dangerous Visions, no matter how popular or influential such volumes have been. (These anthologies, of course, are indicated as the source publications for stories in all the awards and reprint listings, just as individual issues of magazines are.) For now, we're compiling reprint anthologies and collections, as evidence of independent editorial decisions about the worth of individual stories. For now.

A preliminary tally of stories published in these anthologies is posted here; of course, this tally will be refined, and eventually blended with citation and award tallies.
